SUMMARY:"Traces" Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Film screening and Q&A with Searching for Identity founder\, Stacey Goldring. \nWhat was it like to grow up with parents who survived the Holocaust? Who is responsible for ensuring the Holocaust and its generational impact are remembered? Traces answers these questions\, giving voice to the resilient “Second Generation”– children of survivors –as they share their parents’ survival stories and reveal the inherited effects of Holocaust survivorship. In Traces\, Voices of the Second Generation\, we hear directly from children of Holocaust survivors who share families’ story of survival and what it was like to grow up with parents who survived history’s darkest of evils. Presented in partnership with The Jewish Federation of Florida’s Gulf Coast as part of their Real to Reel Film Screening Series\, sponsored by Sue Heyman and Mike White. \n RSVP TODAY\n  \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Rescuing Recipes Project: Bringing Holocaust Family Meals and Memories Back to the Table
DESCRIPTION:  \n \n  \n  \nThe Rescuing Recipes Project: Bringing Holocaust Family Meals and Memories Back to the Table \nRachel Loew Lipman and Elana Karp’s Holocaust family histories are defined by tragedy\, perseverance\, and hope. On November 11th at Savant on Second in St. Petersburg (634 2nd Ave S\, St. Petersburg\, FL 33701)\, those stories will come to life around the dinner table. Starting at 7:00 PM\, The Florida Holocaust Museum’s inaugural “Rescuing Recipes Project: Bringing Holocaust Family Recipes and Memories to The Table” dinner is a unique\, fine-dining experience celebrating food\, wine\, family\, and memory. \nElana\, an award-winning chef\, entrepreneur\, cookbook author\, and founder of Plated is the granddaughter of Holocaust survivors. Her grandmother lived in Poland\, but fled East as the Holocaust began. She and other refugees settled in the fertile farmland of Uzbekistan\, where they lived for the rest of WWII before immigrating to the United States. Her grandfather was a farmer in the same Polish region\, escaped from a ghetto\, hid in the forest\, and fought with the Polish Resistance before ultimately immigrating to America. \nRachel is the youngest winemaker in Maryland. Her family have been vintners and mead makers since the mid-1800s when they lived in the same region as Elana’s family. During the Holocaust\, the Nazis murdered her entire family except for Rachel’s grandfather\, Wolfgang Löw\, who survived two concentration camps before immigrating to America. There he started a new life and in 1982 established Loew Vineyards in Frederick County\, Maryland. Rachel carries on her family’s legacy as Head Winemaker and General Manager of Loew Vineyards. \nThough they took very different roads to reach their respective destinations\, both women found they could explore their families’ harrowing journeys through food and drink. In a pre-meal discussion moderated by FHM Chair (and fellow grandchild of Survivors) Mike Igel\, Elana\, and Rachel will discuss that process\, along with why carrying family recipes forward is so meaningful. \nEvent attendees will not only hear but taste history. Curated exclusively for this event by Elana using her family’s recipes\, the multi-course menu will reach back through the decades\, with each dish paired with Loew Vineyards wine or mead. The dessert will also feature baked goods prepared from the recipes of FHM founder and Holocaust Survivor Walter Loebenberg\, who was an apprentice baker prior to the Holocaust. \nPlease join us in exploring the intersection of heritage and gastronomy at this exclusive event. \n Register Today!

SUMMARY:The Rappaport Family Antisemitism Lecture series featuring a film screening of "The Conspiracy"
DESCRIPTION:The Rappaport Family Antisemitism Lecture series featuring a film screening of The Conspiracy\, followed by a conversation with Director\, Maxim Pozdorovkin and The FHM’s Director of Education and Research Ursula Szczepinska \n Click Here to RSVP Today!\n\nAn animated documentary about the biggest lie ever told: Jews are plotting to take over the world. In times of extreme anxiety and disorientation\, people are often drawn to conspiracy theories. Disinformation and delusion capture the minds of many. Today\, fueled by social media algorithms\, conspiracy theories once confined to the fringe are going mainstream. But beneath the surface\, the pronouncements of QAnon are a retread of an age-old myth. Behind the torch-bearing chants of “Jews will not replace us” we find the original conspiracy theory: the lie that Jews are somehow dangerous. The Conspiracy is a feature documentary about the millions around the world who came to believe this lie\, the fanatics who cultivated it across the centuries\, and three Jewish families cast as villains. \nThe Conspiracy eschews traditional documentary interview techniques for a bold\, layered visual style that combines archive and animation in new ways. Starring Liev Schreiber\, Lake Bell\, Jason Alexander\, Ben Shenkman.

SUMMARY:Babyn Yar and the Art of Felix Lembersky
DESCRIPTION:Babyn Yar paintings by Felix Lembersky remained locked away for years in Yelena Lembersky’s childhood home. The Soviets did not allow Holocaust-themed paintings in state-controlled public spaces. Her mother and grandmother refused to accept their censorship. Instead\, they organized informal shows in their small apartment in Leningrad\, where friends and strangers gathered to commemorate the massacre and see his forbidden art. After years of fighting the system\, the three women left Russia and brought Felix Lembersky’s oeuvre to the United States. His Execution: Babyn Yar canvases\, created between 1944 and 1952\, are now known as the earliest artistic representation of the massacre in Kyiv\, Ukraine. SUMMARY:"Lawyers Without Rights" | Exhibit Opening and Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Experts will discuss topics integral to the exhibit\, including the historical implications of a failed rule of law in the post-Weimar Republic\, and the current state of Holocaust education in Florida schools. \n\n\n“Lawyers Without Rights: The Fate of Jewish Lawyers in Berlin after 1933” is about the rule of law and how one government – the Third Reich in Germany – systematically undermined fair and just law through humiliation\, degradation and legislation leading to expulsion of Jewish lawyers and jurists from the legal profession. As the rule of law comes under attack today throughout the world\, Lawyers Without Rights tragically portrays what can happen when the just rule of law disappears — replaced by an arbitrary rule by law that sweeps aside the rights and dignity of selected populations. The story of the fate of Jewish lawyers in Berlin and all of Germany is more than a historical footnote; it is a wake-up call that a system of justice free of improper political considerations remains fragile and should never be taken for granted.\n\nThe program is free and open to the public\, seating is limited\, RSVP is required.\n\n REGISTER TODAY\n\n\n\nLawyers Without Rights Panelist Bios\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoshua Magidson:\n\nMr. Magidson’s primary area of practice is civil trial work\, with extensive work in commercial cases\, and probate\, estate and trust litigation. He has experience in handling federal civil rights cases involving first amendment issues and local municipal ordinances which he successfully litigated before the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.  Prior to becoming an attorney\, Mr. Magidson proudly served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve\, followed by a two-year stint as a professional umpire in the Minor Leagues\, and then becoming a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor. He joined the firm as a law clerk in 1979\, and then became an associate and then a partner. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUrsula Szczepinska:\n\nUrsula Szczepinska is the Director of Education & Research at The Florida Holocaust Museum. Prior to joining The FHM 17 years ago\, she worked at the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw and at the State Museum at Majdanek on site of the former concentration and death camp in Lublin\, Poland. As the head of The FHM’s Education Department\, Ursula is responsible for teacher\, student\, and community education\, including docent-led tours for various audiences.  Ursula teaches classes for educators and students at middle\, high\, and university levels. She also conducts archival and historical research for Holocaust survivors\, as well as for exhibitions and other projects of The FHM. She has helped survivors discover the fate of their loved ones from whom they were separated during the Holocaust. She leads the Shoah Victims’ Names Recovery Project at The FHM in cooperation with Yad Vashem\, and received the 2011 “Outstanding Achievement Award” from the Florida Association of Museums for submitting over 700 Pages of Testimony from local survivors. In partnership with the Anti-Defamation League and the USHMM\, she has been teaching the Law Enforcement and Society: Lessons of the Holocaust program for police agencies across the state. \n\n\n\n\nPatrick Iyampillai:\n\nPatrick Iyampillai is an attorney and partner at Hale Law – Accident Attorneys. He has successfully recovered millions of dollars on behalf of injury victims across the state of Florida and has been recognized with a multitude of awards and recognitions over the course of his career. He is a current member of the Young Jewish Adults group in Sarasota\, and he is a former Young Adult Division Board Member of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County. While a student at the Stetson University College of Law\, Patrick served as President of the Jewish Law Student Association\, and during his last school year\, recognizing its importance\, he coordinated the Lawyers Without Rights exhibit to be displayed at the Stetson Law Library. As a young professional\, he brings a fresh perspective and a strong belief in the power of understanding history to shape a better future. \n \n\n\n\nConsul General Andreas Siegel:\n\nAndreas Siegel is a career diplomat with a broad range of international experience in strategic\, political\, economic\, and cultural affairs. He holds both a (postgraduate) diploma from the College of Europe\, Bruges/Belgium\, and a Master’s degree in French\, English\, and American literature/linguistics from the University of Freiburg/Germany. \nAndreas has had a long-time connection and affinity with the United States: he was an AFS exchange student in Michigan during the Bi-Centennial year 1975/1976. In the early 1990’s he served as a Vice-Consul at the German Consulate General in Boston\, Mass. \nBefore coming to Florida in July 2019\, Andreas headed the German Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City\, Vietnam. He then spent three years in Lilongwe/Malawi (South-Eastern Africa) as Deputy Head of Mission and Chargé d’affaires. Back to Bonn\, he worked at the Federal Chancellery\, dealing with international strategic issues. Igel\, a third-generation Holocaust survivor\, is chair of the Florida Commissioner of Education’s Task Force on Holocaust Education and board chair of The Florida Holocaust Museum. DESCRIPTION:Evening Yom HaShoah commemoration\, featuring Rabbi Danielle Upbin and Rabbi David Weizman\, with a presentation by Holocaust Survivor Roland Levi.  Tuesday\, April 18\, at 5:30 PM. \nRSVP Required \n RSVP TODAY!\n\nRoland Levi was born in Antwerp\, Belgium in 1939. He was living there with his father\, mother\, and older sister\, Nadya in 1940 when the German army conquered Belgium. In 1944 Roland’s mother and father were arrested and taken to the Dossin Barracks in Mechelen\, an assembly point for Jews. From there they were transferred to Auschwitz. Nadya and Roland remained hidden at the congregation of Notre Dame de Sion but were soon arrested by the Gestapo. They were taken to an orphanage in Wezembeek and set to be transported to Auschwitz. The orphanage director\, Marie Blum Albert\, was able to negotiate with guards at the train station and secured the release of numerous Jewish wards of the orphanage\, including Nadya and Roland. The children were returned to the orphanage. Roland and Nadya were liberated in September 1944 and reunited with their parents who also survived. Roland settled in the United States in the 1960s. SUMMARY:Holocaust Remembrance Day
DESCRIPTION:Join us on January 27th at noon for a very special virtual presentation by Holocaust Survivor\, Halina Herman during International Holocaust Remembrance Day\, on our Facebook page.  Admission to The FHM will be free all day to visitors. \n\n View on our Facebook page\n\n\n\nHalina Herman was born in Warsaw\, Poland at the start of World War II.  Her father was a doctor.  Just after the Germans occupied Poland and her family was forced into a ghetto\, her father was taken away and she never saw him again. \nHer mother immediately left and the two began traveling around from place to place in order to stay safe.  When she was three\, she remembers hiding in an attic with her mother.  Later her mother obtained false papers and got a job as a maid in Krakow.  She found a Christian family to take care of her\, but soon moved her to another family who took better care of her.  While in hiding with these family\, Halina was raised as a Catholic. \nAt the end of the war\, she was reunited with her mother in Krakow\, however\, she continued going to Catholic church and attended school at the convent until she was 10.  In 1949\, her mother finally told her she was Jewish and they emigrated to Paris.  Her mother remarried another survivor.
