SUMMARY:Lisl Schick Day: WEDU “Be More Involved” Award Winner!
DESCRIPTION:Be More Involved | Mason Dixon Award for Volunteerism\nMrs. Schick will recount her amazing journey from Vienna to England to the United States at 1pm on March 1.  A regularly scheduled docent tour of the Museum’s permanent exhibition will begin at 2pm. \nMrs. Schick was selected as the winner of this year’s WEDU Be More Involved | Mason Dixon Award for Volunteerism. In honor of this wonderful accomplishment\, Lisl Schick Day will take place on March 1\, 2016 at The Florida Holocaust Museum. A percentage of all admission on this day go to educational programs that Lisl Schick supports! \nLisl Schick was born in Vienna\, Austria in 1927. \nIn 1939\, at age eleven\, she and her seven year old brother escaped Nazi-occupied Austria on a Kindertransport train for England\, where they lived for six years before being reunited with their parents in New York. \n This life-defining experience has led Mrs. Schick to volunteer hundreds of hours speaking at schools and with tour groups at The Florida Holocaust Museum. She translates staggering numbers into an individual story\, situating it in historical context for audiences and emphasizing how we all have the potential to make a positive difference through upstander behavior. \nSharing her testimony with children who are the same age she was during the Holocaust is a powerful teaching tool\, something to which students attest in their thank you letters: \n\n“You showed us responsibility and maturity. I was intrigued when I heard that you\, a young girl at the time\, could be so responsible and uplifting to your brother on the train. This is meaningful to people because they could look back and act like you did.”\n“I intend to use this information in the future so that I will not be a bystander if someone is getting bullied.”\n\nTo honor local educators Mrs. Schick sponsors the annual Walter Porges Teacher Appreciation Evening in memory of her brother. She also serves on The Florida Holocaust Museum’s Board of Directors and the annual gala committee. \n In addition Mrs. Schick helped found the Ruth Eckerd Performing Arts Center\, serving on its first Board of Directors. She helped establish Planters\, the women’s educational and fundraising branch for the Morton Plant/Mease Foundation. She held leadership roles for the Pinellas County Medical Auxiliary\, American Cancer Society\, and Hadassah\, for which she was the first elected National Vice President from the State of Florida.

SUMMARY:Bent\, by Martin Sherman- A Staged Reading
DESCRIPTION:The Florida Holocaust Museum presents a staged reading of “Bent\,” performed by A Simple Theatre on Tuesday\, March 15th\, at 7:00 pm. \n“Bent” is a 1979 play by Martin Sherman\, and its title refers to the slang word “bent” used in some European countries to refer to homosexuals. Bent revolves around the persecution of gays in Nazi Germany\, and takes place during and after the Night of the Long Knives\, sometimes called Operation Hummingbird\, when the Nazi regime carried out a three-day series of political ex-judicial executions. \nAt least 85 people died during the purge\, although the final death toll may have been in the hundreds\, and more than a thousand perceived opponents were arrested. The night was a turning point for the German government that established Hitler as “the supreme judge of the German people\,” as he put in his July 13\, 1934 speech to the Reichstag. \nPlay Synopsis: \nIn 1934 Berlin on the eve of the Nazi incursion\, Max\, a grifter and his lover Rudy are recovering from a night of debauchery with a SA trooper. Two soldiers burst into the apartment and slit their guest’s throat\, beginning a nightmare odyssey through Nazi Germany. \nProduced with and performed by A Simple Theatre at The Florida Holocaust Museum. This performance is for mature audiences only. \nTo purchase tickets\, visit asimpletheatre.org or call (727) 864-7811.

Add the celery root\, shallots\, fennel\, garlic and bay leaf and cook over moderate heat\, stirring occasionally\, until the vegetables are lightly browned\, about 5 minutes. Add the farro and cook\, stirring\, for 2 minutes. Add the wine and cook\, stirring occasionally\, until completely absorbed\, about 5 minutes. Add half of the water and cook\, stirring occasionally\, until completely absorbed\, about 12 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Add the remaining water and cook\, stirring occasionally\, until completely absorbed\, about 12 minutes longer. Discard the bay leaf. Stir in the grated cheese along with the artichokes and the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter until creamy. Spoon into bowls.\nHeat a medium sauté pan\, lightly coated with extra virgin olive oil\, over medium heat. Sauté the asparagus\, peas and fava beans until lightly caramelized. Arrange the vegetables over the farro.\nIn a medium bowl\, toss the sliced celery and celery leaves with the parsley\, chives and tarragon. Add the vinegar and oil\, season with salt and pepper and toss. Mound the salad over the farro\, garnish with cheese shavings and serve.\n\n  \nHERBED PEA AND RICOTTA BRUSCHETTA RECIPE \n1 cup whole milk ricotta cheese \nzest of 1 lemon \n3 tablespoons chopped flat leaf parsley \n3 tablespoons chopped basil \n1 tablespoon chopped mint \n3 tablespoons evoo \n6 baby artichokes (about 1 pound) \n1/2 lemon \n1 cup shelled fresh fava beans (from 1 pound in the pod) \n6 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil\, plus more for brushing \n8 small spring garlic cloves or 4 medium garlic cloves\, thinly sliced \n1 small shallot\, minced \n8 medium asparagus\, peeled and cut on the diagonal into 1/2-inch lengths \n12 scallions\, cut into 1-inch lengths \n1 cup shelled fresh peas (from 1 1/2 pounds in the pod) \nSalt \n1 tablespoon chopped flat-leaf parsley \n1/2 tablespoon finely chopped chives \n1/2 teaspoon finely chopped tarragon \nEight 1/2-inch-thick slices of sourdough bread\, crusts removed \n\nIn a small bowl\, combine the ricotta cheese\, lemon zest\, herbs and evoo. Stir together and set aside.\nPreheat the oven to 375°. Pull the outer leaves off the artichokes until you reach the yellow inner leaves. With a small\, sharp knife\, trim the stems and any dark green spots from the artichoke bottoms. Rub with the lemon. Slice the artichokes lengthwise 1/8 inch thick and place in a bowl; squeeze the lemon half over them and toss to coat with juice.\nBlanch the fava beans in a medium saucepan of boiling water for about 15 seconds to loosen their skins. Drain and let cool\, then peel the fava beans.\nIn a large\, deep skillet\, warm the 6 tablespoons of olive oil. Add the garlic and shallot and cook over moderate heat until fragrant\, about 3 minutes. Stir in the artichokes until coated with oil and spread in an even layer. Cover with a round of parchment paper an inch larger than the skillet\, pressing it directly over the artichokes. Cover the skillet with a lid and cook over moderately low heat until the artichokes are barely tender\, about 3 minutes. Add the asparagus\, cover with the parchment and lid and cook for about 3 minutes.\n\n\nRepeat with the scallions\, peas and fava beans\, adding them at approximate 3-minute intervals and adjusting the heat so the vegetables sweat but do not brown. Season with salt\, stir in the herbs and remove the skillet from the heat.\nPut the bread slices on a baking sheet\, lightly brush both sides with olive oil and bake until golden brown\, about 4 minutes per side. Set the toasts on plates\, dollop the cheese mixture on the toasts\, spoon the vegetables on top and serve.

SUMMARY:Woman in Gold
DESCRIPTION:Our upcoming Woman in Gold event on Thursday\, April 7th is officially sold out! Thank you all for your wonderful support. \nCO-COUNSEL FOR “WOMAN IN GOLD” CASE TO SPEAK AT THE FHM \nThe Florida Holocaust Museum is excited to present an evening with renowned attorney Don Burris\, the senior attorney who successfully argued the Woman in Gold legal case before the U.S. Supreme Court. Burris will give an in-depth look at the historical Woman in Gold art restitution case\, argued before the U.S. Supreme Court and an arbitration panel in Vienna\, as well as other art restitution cases.   \nDon Burris was the senior attorney in the case\, later featured in the 2015 film Woman in Gold\, starring Helen Mirren.  These proceedings made headlines during the 1980’s when Maria Altman claimed that the Austrian government had stolen six Gustav Klimt paintings from her family when they were forced to flee during the Nazi annexation of Austria. Included in the paintings was the portrait of her aunt\, referred to as the “Woman in Gold.” After the war\, the Austrian government contended that the six Klimt paintings had been willed to the federal art museum\, the Galerie Belvedere\, a claim proved to be untrue. In 1999\, Altmann began her legal battle to have the painting returned to her family.  Her suit resulted in the 2004 U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Altmann V. Republic of Austria.   \nFor the past fourteen years\, Mr. Burris has devoted his career to the pursuit of art works and other assets stolen by the Nazi authorities before and during World War II. On April 7 at The FHM\, Mr. Burris will discuss his work as co-counsel on the “Woman in Gold” case in a lecture entitled “Triumph from Tragedy: Restitution of Stolen Cultural Property.”  \nRESERVATIONS REQUIRED \nThis event is presented by The FHM’s Lawyers of Conscience\, underwritten by The Barry A. Cohen Legal Team\, and will take place on Thursday\, April 7th at 5:30 pm at The FHM. The cost to attend is a minimum donation of $25.00 with reservations required. The lecture will include heavy hors d’oeuvres\, along with the unique opportunity to hear Don Burris speak about this historical case and answer questions posed by members of the audience. To make your reservation\, please call (727) 820-0100 x301.

SUMMARY:Yom HaShoah Commemorative Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Yom HaShoah Commemorative Ceremony and Talk with Acclaimed Author Martin Goldsmith \nIn observance of Yom HaShoah\, The Florida Holocaust Museum\, in partnership with the Pinellas County Board of Rabbis and the Tampa Rabbinical Association\, will host a commemorative ceremony and candle lighting by Holocaust Survivors on Wednesday\, May 4th at 6:30 p.m.\, followed by a talk from Martin Goldsmith\, author of “Alex’s Wake: A Voyage of Betrayal and a Journey of Remembrance.” This program is free and open to the public. \nKnown more commonly outside of Israel as Holocaust Remembrance Day\, Yom HaShoah honors the memory of the more than six million Jews who perished during the Holocaust. The full name of the day is Yom HaShoah Ve-Hagevurah or “Day of the Remembrance of the Holocaust and the Heroism” as it also marks the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. \nIn his latest memoir\, Goldsmith traces the experience of his grandfather and uncle aboard the St. Louis. Filled with refugees\, the ship crossed the Atlantic in attempts to flee Nazi Germany\, but was turned back at every port. His relatives spent three years in a number of different settlements before ultimately being sent to their deaths in Auschwitz. Seventy years later\, Goldsmith followed in their footsteps to bear witness and reconcile his own relationship with the past.  \n“Martin’s journey and book offer a new perspective on the Holocaust; one that is typically missing from most books and films about the Shoah. . . . Alex’s Wake is a powerful and evocative memoir.”      —New York Journal of Books \nAuthor Q&A and book signing to conclude this program. Please RSVP to (727) 820-0100 x271.  \nFor more about Martin Goldsmith\, visit www.alexswakebook.com

SUMMARY:Helen Suzman: Fighter for Human Rights
DESCRIPTION:Helen Suzman: Fighter for Human Rights tells the story of Suzman’s rise as the leading Member of Parliament to oppose apartheid legislation during 36 years of public service. Meticulously selected photographs\, personal letters\, speeches\, political cartoons and news articles convey the tremendous strength she demonstrated while facing constant animosity\, antisemitism and intimidation from other South African Parliamentarians\, colleagues and citizens. \n \nHelen Suzman was one of South Africa’s most vociferous and energetic opponents of apartheid. She takes pride of place among those who devoted their lives to the fight for human rights and the rule of law in South Africa. From the start of a political career that spanned almost four decades\, she worked tirelessly\, never flinching from challenging the pernicious system created by apartheid. \nHelen Suzman’s struggle against ruling National Party\, both within and outside of Parliament\, was relentless and often lonely. For thirteen years (1961-1974)\, she was the only Member of Parliament from the Progressive Party. Against great odds in Parliament\, she resisted the pro-apartheid government. Although she represented an affluent White constituency\, she saw herself as an “honorary ombudsman for all those people who have no vote and no Member of Parliament.” Her contribution to the pursuit of justice in South Africa received overwhelming recognition at home and abroad. Twice nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize\, her valiant stand against the injustices of the apartheid regime was acknowledged by numerous institutions. \nHelen Suzman’s tenacious fight for human rights led her to a great friendship with Nelson Mandela. “She is a person appreciated by all South Africans\,” wrote Mandela on the occasion of Helen’s 90th birthday in November 2007. “Her courage\, integrity and principled commitment to justice have marked her as one of the outstanding figures of our history.”

Ravensbrück\, the Nazi’s major concentration camp for women\, brought fear and terror to its imprisoned\, tortured victims. Subject to unspeakable horrors\, few survived. The faces of these triumphant women have been immortalized in one of the newest exhibits of Holocaust art to emerge today. What makes the collection significant is its focal point on women and their experiences during the Holocaust. The exhibit centers around seven large\, wooden panels with mixed media and photo transfer images of Ravensbrück women\, young and old\, survivors and those who did not live.  \n

SUMMARY:Opening of "Matzevot for Everyday Use: Photographs by Łukasz Baksik"
DESCRIPTION:The Florida Holocaust Museum is pleased to present the North American premiere of Matzevot for Everyday Use by Łukasz Baksik. This exhibition features photographs taken in Poland by Polish photographer Łukasz Baksik to document the ways in which Jewish gravestones have been stolen and re-appropriated. The matzevot are now parts of fences\, pavements\, and grindstones. Even today\, the matzevot continue to be used in cases where ordinary stone\, of which there is no shortage\, could be used. \nThe photographer wishes to illuminate the lengths that “people have gone to wipe out traces of Jewish culture” and to start a dialogue about how people can live in the midst of relics of antisemitism\, ignoring their shared history with a community that is no longer there. The showing of Matzevot for Everyday Use at The Florida Holocaust Museum will be the North American premiere of the exhibition. \nThe opening reception will take place on Saturday\, October 15\, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. and is free to members of The Florida Holocaust Museum and $9 per person for guests. Attendees will meet with the photographer Łukasz Baksik and enjoy wine and hors d’oeuvres. Please RSVP by calling 727.820.0100\, extension 271.  \nMatzevot for Everyday Use by Łukasz Baksik opens to the public on Saturday\, October 15\, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at The Florida Holocaust Museum. The Florida Holocaust Museum is located at 55 5th Street S\, St. Petersburg\, FL 33701.  \nFor an exhibition study guide for educators\, click here. \nThis exhibition is made possible through the generous sponsorship of the Gemunder Family Foundation\, with additional support from the Jewish Federation of Pinellas and Pasco Counties.

SUMMARY:GHRAM lecture "They Were Neighbors" by Jan T. Gross and showing of the film "Aftermath" in Tampa
DESCRIPTION:The Florida Holocaust Museum in partnership with Tampa Bay Jewish Film Festival Presents: \n“They Were Neighbors” \n \nJanuary 11\, 2017 @ 6:30 P.M.\n Bryan Glazer Family JCC\n 522 N Howard Ave\, Tampa\, FL 33606 \nThe Florida Holocaust Museum presents a Genocide and Human Rights Awareness Movement (GHRAM) lecture by Jan T. Gross titled “They Were Neighbors” in conjunction with the showing of Aftermath with the Tampa Bay Jewish Film Festival. Aftermath is a 2012 Polish film inspired by Mr. Gross’ historical book Neighbors: The Destruction of the Jewish Community in Jedwabne\, Poland. The film Aftermath is about a Polish man who returns home after the death of his father and unearths a secret about the now-deceased Jewish residents of his village. \nNeighbors: The Destruction of the Jewish Community in Jedwabne\, Poland tells the story of one summer day in 1941. In Nazi-occupied Poland\, half of the population of the town Jedwabne murdered the other half—some 1\,600 men\, women\, and children. Only seven of the town’s Jews survived. \nIn this shocking and compelling study\, historian Jan Gross pieces together eyewitness accounts as well as physical evidence into a comprehensive reconstruction of the horrific July day remembered well by locals but hidden to history. Revealing wider truths about Jewish-Polish relations\, the Holocaust\, and human responses to occupation and totalitarianism\, Gross’ investigation sheds light on how Jedwabne’s Jews came to be murdered-not by faceless Nazis\, but by people who knew them well. \nAftermath was written and directed by Polish director Władysław Pasikowski. The inspiration for Pasikowski to write and direct the film was the controversy in Poland surrounding the 2000 publication of Gross’ Neighbors: The Destruction of the Jewish Community in Jedwabne\, Poland. According to Gross’ historical research into the 1941 Jedwabne pogrom\, Polish gentiles had murdered the hundreds of Jewish residents of Jedwabne\, contrary to the official history which held the Nazi occupying force accountable. \n*This program is $5.00 to attend. \nTo register\, please visit: https://www.jewishtampa.com/jewish-federation-events/jangross or you may pay at the door.  \n  \nPresented by The FHM in partnership with the Tampa Jewish Federation and the Tampa Bay Jewish Film Festival.  \n

SUMMARY:Opening of "Courage and Compassion: The Legacy of the Bielski Brothers"
DESCRIPTION:An original\, award-winning FHM exhibition\, Courage and Compassion: The Legacy of the Bielski Brothers chronicles the Bielski brothers’ story. This exhibition\, presented nationally by Bank of America\, is a multi-media presentation showcasing the heroic efforts of three brothers who helped save more than 1\,200 people while living in the forest during World War II. \nThree brothers\, Tuvia\, Asael and Zus Bielski\, took refuge from the Nazis in the forests surrounding Novogrudok\, Belarus. In the forest\, they formed a community of men\, women and children that numbered more than 1\,200 by the end of the war. The brothers led the group in acts of sabotage and defense against the Nazis. It is through the brothers’ leadership that the group survived starvation\, harsh winters and the threat of the Nazis and their collaborators. \nDuring World War II\, three of the Bielski brothers ran a Jewish partisan unit in Western Belorussia that saved close to 1\,200 Jews from the ghettos of Novogrudok and Lida and the surrounding countryside.  Their unit or otriad\, as known in Russian\, was unique.  While the great majority of partisan groups in World War II sought to fight the Germans in their midst\,  the Bielski brothers cared more about preserving the lives of as many Jews as possible than they did about attacking the German forces that occupied Western Belorussia.  For more than two years the brothers commanded their partisan unit in the Belorussian forests.  Their acts of rescue during extremely dangerous times stands as a monument to courage and compassion.  The Bielski brothers may be called Upstanders\, individuals willing to put their own lives in danger on behalf of others. This exhibition tells their story.  \nOn display January 14\, 2017 – June 18\, 2017 at The Florida Holocaust Museum.
