SUMMARY:Reflections on Man’s Fate: Artwork by Judith Weinshall Liberman
DESCRIPTION:Reflections on Man’s Fate is an exhibition of paintings and textile works by artist Judith Weinshall Liberman. Drawn from works from the Museum’s permanent collection\, the show includes wall hangings and works on canvas from the artist’s Holocaust Paintings\, Holocaust Wall Hangings\, Skull Series and Genocide Series. Her work focuses on the present state of mankind as well as the relentlessness and enormity of history’s darkest period. \n \nBorn in Israel\, Liberman came to the United States after completing high school. She received four American university degrees in social studies and law\, including a J.D. degree from the University of Chicago Law School and an LL.M. degree from the University of Michigan Law School. Initially she wrote and lectured about law\, before redirecting her interest and passion into art. Judith is the award-winning author-illustrator of The Bird’s Last Song (Addison-Wesley\, 1976). She has exhibited her work in one-person and group shows through the United States\, including an earlier solo exhibition at The FHM and abroad. Free Museum Day and Smithsonian magazine’s twelfth annual Museum Day Live! The FHM just announced the start of their 25th Anniversary year and was recently chosen by USA TODAY as the #1 museum to visit in St. Petersburg – Clearwater out of a top 10 list of museums.  \nThe FHM will be open Saturday\, September 24 from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. All of the Museum’s exhibitions will be open for viewing\, including the permanent exhibition History\, Heritage and Hope\, and two new exhibitions Reflections on Man’s Fate: Artwork by Judith Weinshall Liberman and Women of Ravensbrück: Portraits of Courage. \nReflections on Man’s Fate is an exhibition of paintings and textile works by artist Judith Weinshall Liberman. Drawn from works from the Museum’s permanent collection\, the show includes wall hangings and works on canvas from the artist’s Holocaust Paintings\, Holocaust Wall Hangings\, Skull Series and Genocide Series. Her work focuses on the present state of mankind as well as the relentlessness and enormity of history’s darkest period. \nWomen of Ravensbrück: Portraits of Courage is an exhibition by artist Julia Terwilliger. Ravensbrück\, the Nazi’s major concentration camp for women\, brought fear and terror to its imprisoned\, tortured victims. Subject to unspeakable horrors\, few survived. The faces of these triumphant women have been immortalized in one of the newest exhibits of Holocaust art to emerge today. What makes the collection significant is its focal point on women and their experiences during the Holocaust. The exhibit centers around seven large\, wooden panels with mixed media and photo transfer images of Ravensbrück women\, young and old\, survivors and those who did not live.  \n

SUMMARY:Opening of "Matzevot for Everyday Use: Photographs by Łukasz Baksik"
DESCRIPTION:The Florida Holocaust Museum is pleased to present the North American premiere of Matzevot for Everyday Use by Łukasz Baksik. This exhibition features photographs taken in Poland by Polish photographer Łukasz Baksik to document the ways in which Jewish gravestones have been stolen and re-appropriated. The matzevot are now parts of fences\, pavements\, and grindstones. Even today\, the matzevot continue to be used in cases where ordinary stone\, of which there is no shortage\, could be used. \nThe photographer wishes to illuminate the lengths that “people have gone to wipe out traces of Jewish culture” and to start a dialogue about how people can live in the midst of relics of antisemitism\, ignoring their shared history with a community that is no longer there. The showing of Matzevot for Everyday Use at The Florida Holocaust Museum will be the North American premiere of the exhibition. \nThe opening reception will take place on Saturday\, October 15\, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. and is free to members of The Florida Holocaust Museum and $9 per person for guests. DESCRIPTION:The Florida Holocaust Museum in partnership with the White Bus For Better Futures Program Presents: \n \nNovember 1\, 2016 @ 7:00 P.M.\n USF St. Pete Campus University Student Center (Ballroom #3)\n 200 6th Ave South St. Petersburg\, FL \nOn April 28\, 1945\, life begins again. As hundreds of Holocaust Survivors from concentration camps arrive in the harbor of Malmö\, Sweden\, news teams capture and televise their images. Seventy years later\, those same Survivors view the archival footage of their arrival to Sweden\, re-experiencing the emotions of the day and sharing their stories. \nThe group of Survivors include Jews from all over Europe\, Norwegian prisoners of war\, Polish mothers and children\, members of the French resistance and British spies – and perhaps unique among them\, Elsie Ragusin\, a young Italian-American who was visiting her grandparents in Italy when she was accused of being a spy and deported to Auschwitz. As the Survivors study the images\, they are surprised to recognize family members\, friends and themselves\, sparking personal and shocking revelations about the war. \nAfter the film\, director Magnus Gertten and Survivor Elsie Ragusin will speak. \nThis program is free and open to the public. \nPresented by The FHM in partnership with the White Bus For Better Futures Program and The University of South Florida St. Petersburg\, with additional support provided by the Jack Chester Foundation.

Dew\, one of America’s most respected historians of the South\, an award winning author whose books have helped to shape the conversation on the history of race in this country and a Williams College professor. Dew was born & raised in St. Pete. His most recent book\, The Making of a Racist: A Southerner Reflects on Family\, History\, and the Slave Trade is in part an autobiography of life in the South in the 1950’s\, allowing readers to understand just how deeply racial thinking saturated white southerners who were otherwise admirable people.  \n“An Evening of Conscious Conversation” with Dr. Charles B. DESCRIPTION:The Florida Holocaust Museum’s Annual Kristallnacht Commemoration takes place at the Museum on Wednesday\, November 9th at 6:30 p.m. The program commemorating Kristallnacht\, also called the Night of Broken Glass\, features a commemoration ceremony\, and includes prayers and candle-lighting with Holocaust Survivors. \nAfter the ceremony\, author Russel Lazega will discuss his book\, Managing Bubbie\, a family memoir that recounts the trials of one Jewish family in Miami Beach as they try to oversee the care of the elderly\, unmanageable Lea Lazega. Managing Bubbie revisits the Holocaust period to mine the love\, hope\, and humor that emerged from the deepest despair. \n\nThe FHM’s Annual Kristallnacht Commemoration is free and open to the public. \n\n \n\n

Open to the public\, free to all.\nDecember 13\, 2016: “Global Antisemitism in 2016: What the U.S. Government is Doing to Combat It“ \nGHRAM lecture by Ira N. Forman\n 6:30 p.m. at The Florida Holocaust Museum \n  \nThe Florida Holocaust Museum presents a Genocide and Human Rights Awareness Movement (GHRAM) lecture by Ira N. Forman titled\, “Global Antisemitism in 2016: What the U.S. Government is Doing to Combat It.” This program is free and open to the public. \nMr. Forman currently works for the U.S. Department of State as the Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism. Antisemitism is discrimination against or hatred toward Jews and the Special Envoy develops and implements policies and projects to support efforts to combat antisemitism. Mr. Forman will be speaking to attendees about his involvement in advancing U.S. Foreign Policy on antisemitism.  \nSome contemporary examples of antisemitism include: calling for\, aiding\, or justifying the killing or harming of Jews; making mendacious\, dehumanizing\, demonizing\, or stereotypical allegations about Jews; and accusing Jews as a people of being responsible for real or imagined wrongdoing committed by a single Jewish person or group\, the state of Israel\, or even for acts committed by non-Jews.  \nThe Special Envoy was established by the Global Antisemitism Review Act of 2004. The Bureau of Democracy\, Human Rights and Labor (DRL) produces the State Department’s annual reports on Human Rights Practices and International Religious Freedom\, and the Special Envoy provides input on antisemitism for these reports. Mr. Forman was sworn in as Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism on May 20\, 2013.  \nMr. Forman received his B.A. from Harvard University where he graduated Magna Cum Laude in Government. Forman titled\, “Global Antisemitism in 2016: What the U.S. Government is Doing to Combat It.” This program is free and open to the public. \nMr. Forman currently works for the U.S. Department of State as the Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism. Antisemitism is discrimination against or hatred toward Jews and the Special Envoy develops and implements policies and projects to support efforts to combat antisemitism. Mr. Forman will be speaking to attendees about his involvement in advancing U.S. Foreign Policy on antisemitism.  \nSome contemporary examples of antisemitism include: calling for\, aiding\, or justifying the killing or harming of Jews; making mendacious\, dehumanizing\, demonizing\, or stereotypical allegations about Jews; and accusing Jews as a people of being responsible for real or imagined wrongdoing committed by a single Jewish person or group\, the state of Israel\, or even for acts committed by non-Jews.  \nThe Special Envoy was established by the Global Antisemitism Review Act of 2004. The Bureau of Democracy\, Human Rights and Labor (DRL) produces the State Department’s annual reports on Human Rights Practices and International Religious Freedom\, and the Special Envoy provides input on antisemitism for these reports. Mr. Forman was sworn in as Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism on May 20\, 2013.  \nMr. Forman received his B.A. from Harvard University where he graduated Magna Cum Laude in Government. DESCRIPTION:An original\, award-winning FHM exhibition\, Courage and Compassion: The Legacy of the Bielski Brothers chronicles the Bielski brothers’ story. This exhibition\, presented nationally by Bank of America\, is a multi-media presentation showcasing the heroic efforts of three brothers who helped save more than 1\,200 people while living in the forest during World War II. \nThree brothers\, Tuvia\, Asael and Zus Bielski\, took refuge from the Nazis in the forests surrounding Novogrudok\, Belarus. In the forest\, they formed a community of men\, women and children that numbered more than 1\,200 by the end of the war. The brothers led the group in acts of sabotage and defense against the Nazis. It is through the brothers’ leadership that the group survived starvation\, harsh winters and the threat of the Nazis and their collaborators. \nDuring World War II\, three of the Bielski brothers ran a Jewish partisan unit in Western Belorussia that saved close to 1\,200 Jews from the ghettos of Novogrudok and Lida and the surrounding countryside.  Their unit or otriad\, as known in Russian\, was unique.  While the great majority of partisan groups in World War II sought to fight the Germans in their midst\,  the Bielski brothers cared more about preserving the lives of as many Jews as possible than they did about attacking the German forces that occupied Western Belorussia.  For more than two years the brothers commanded their partisan unit in the Belorussian forests.  Their acts of rescue during extremely dangerous times stands as a monument to courage and compassion.  The Bielski brothers may be called Upstanders\, individuals willing to put their own lives in danger on behalf of others. DESCRIPTION:Holocaust  By  Bullets  features  ten  years  of  field  investigations  in  the  former  Soviet  Union  by  Yahad – In  Unum. Yahad – In Unum\, founded by French Catholic Priest Father Patrick Desbois\, presents its painstaking research in a succinct yet approachable manner that enables the visitor to uncover\, step‐by‐step\, the crime committed against Jews and Roma by the Nazi killing units.  \nKnown as the “Holocaust by Bullets”\, the systematic  killing  of  all  Jews  started  before  the  creation  of  concentration  camps  and  continued  until  WWII‘s end throughout the ex‐Soviet Union from 1942 to 1944.  The exhibit gives viewers a chance to learn about this lesser‐known side of the Holocaust\, through eyewitness testimonies\, photographs\, and maps.  The  exhibit  presents  Yahad’s  identification  of  five  steps  of  the  crime  that  took  place  almost  systematically for every mass killing throughout Eastern Europe leading up to the executions—the arrest\, the road\, the undressing\, the shooting\, and after the executions\, the looting. \nYahad – In Unum is a Paris-based organization dedicated to collecting testimonies of eyewitnesses\, and identifying and documenting sites of mass crimes committed against Jews and Roma by the Germans and their collaborators during World War II in Eastern Europe. Stemming from the initiative of its founder and president\, French Catholic priest Father Patrick Desbois\, since 2004 the organization has identified over 1\,400 execution sites and interviewed close to 4\,000 eyewitnesses in 8 countries. \nFather Desbois has spent his life researching the Holocaust\, fighting antisemitism\, and furthering relations between Catholics and Jews. The exhibition focuses on Father Desbois and Yahad – In Unum’s research in Eastern Europe. \nThe form of genocide detailed by Yahad – In Unum’s exhibition is unlike any other study of genocidal activity ever conducted and presented. \nIn the exhibition\, Yahad – In Unum presents its painstaking 10 years of research in a succinct yet appropriate manner allowing the visitor to uncover\, step-by-step\, the crime committed against Jews and Roma by the Nazi killing units\, their Axis supporters\, and local collaborators in Eastern Europe. \nMass killings in places such as Cambodia\, Darfur\, the Balkans and Syria are modeled after what Yahad’s founder Father Patrick Desbois calls the archetype of these horrors – those village-by-village\, on site massacres – perpetrated by the Nazis and their collaborators. \nThe Florida Holocaust Museum’s Curator of Education & Director of Research Urszula Szczepinska was invited by Yahad – In Unum to create a study guide to be used worldwide in conjunction with the exhibition. This event has a goal of encouraging a community-wide response by institutions and individuals to create greater understanding and connection rather than fear of differences. \nWe’re joining with other groups to convene “Love Lives Here: No Place For Hate” at The Florida Holocaust Museum on March 9th at 6:30 pm.The goals for the evening are pretty simple: We want to stand in solidarity with those who are being targeted by hate and make a statement that love is more powerful. We want to learn from each other how to help those in fear’s way stay safe. And we want to counter the fears we harbor within ourselves by meeting people who walk different walks than our own. \nThis evening is not about politics\, it’s about people. People across the political spectrum can agree that threats\, attacks and abuse are not the sign of a healthy society. This evening is not about identifying bullies for counterattack but standing together to show that Love Lives Here in our community\, that it is No Place for Hate. \nWe’ll start with a diverse panel of faith leaders discussing with the attendees what it means to show solidarity to those being targeted for their faith. STAY TUNED FOR FUTURE DATE TO BE ANNOUNCED. *** \nTestimonies from the Rwandan Genocide GHRAM Lecture by Karen Jungblut \n \nThe Florida Holocaust Museum’s Genocide and Human Rights Awareness Movement (GHRAM) lecture series brings Rwandan Genocide testimony expert Karen Jungblut to St. Petersburg! \nAs the Director of Research and Documentation at the University of Southern California Shoah Founation\, Jungblut oversees scholarship and research activities\, as well as a global network of partner sites with access to the Institute’s nearly 52\,000 testimonies. Jungblut is in charge of expanding the existing archive with video of Survivors of other genocides\, which will provide scholars and teachers with unprecedented research and teaching opportunities. \nIn 2013\, the USC Shoah Foundation’s Visual History Archive expanded beyond the Holocaust for the first time\, taking in 64 audiovisual testimonies of survivors and witnesses of the Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. That set of atrocities claimed as many as one million lives over the course of about 100 days in 1994 when government-backed militias of ethnic Hutus went on a mass killing spree targeting the country’s next largest ethnic group\, the Tutsis. The Rwandan government has since eliminated the official use of those ethnic terms in its census and on identity cards in hopes of fostering reconciliation. \nIn order to integrate testimonies recorded and owned by other organizations into the Visual History Archive\, the USC Shoah Foundation has initiated the Preserving the Legacy program\, in which The Florida Holocaust Museum is an active partner and a soon to be access point for the Visual History Archive. The Visual History Archive allows users to search through and view more than 54\,000 video testimonies of survivors and witnesses of genocide. In addition to Holocaust testimony\, the Visual History Archive includes testimonies from the Armenian Genocide that coincided with World War I\, the 1937 Nanjing Massacre in China\, the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda\, the Guatemalan Genocide of 1978-1996 and the Cambodian Genocide of 1975-1979. \n  \nThis program is one of many free programs to be offered by The FHM this year in celebration of its 25th Anniversary. For additional information about this program and to learn more about The FHM’s upcoming 25th Anniversary events and exhibitions\, visit the Museum online at www.TheFHM.org/25th. \n

We invite the public to enter a family dish\, taste the traditional recipes of others\, or both! \nThe program will feature a cooking demonstration and sampling from Michael Twitty\, culinary historian\, food writer\, and Judaic Studies teacher. Twitty’s work is focused on African-American foodways\, culinary traditions of African diaspora\, and African influence on food culture in the American South.  \nThose in attendance will have a chance to sample dishes and vote on their favorites to award a People’s Choice Award\, so participants in the contest are encouraged to bring sufficient quantities for the public to taste. Among the groups persecuted as threats to the national health were Germany’s homosexual men. SUMMARY:Honoring the Memory of Raoul Wallenberg & Presentation with Author\, Morris Wolff
DESCRIPTION:  \n                \nThirty-four years ago\, when Morris Wolff was practicing international and trial law in Philadelphia and was a professor at the University of Pennsylvania Law School\, he was asked by the half-brother of Swedish diplomat\, Raoul Wallenberg\, to sue the Soviet Union and force them to release his brother.   Raoul Wallenberg\, who was not Jewish\, was instrumental in saving tens of thousands of Jewish lives in Nazi occupied Hungary. Kidnapped by the Russians\, he disappeared into the Soviet Gulag. Much of the mysteries surrounding Wallenberg’s imprisonment\, the circumstances of his death\, and his possible ties to US intelligence remain unsolved. Wallenberg’s many courageous actions earned him many honors\, including the titles of Honorary Citizen of the United States\, and “Righteous Among the Nations” by the State of Israel.   \nWolff has written a book about his pro bono effort to rescue Wallenberg from a Soviet prison\, and he will be the featured speaker at an interfaith event on Wednesday\, May 17th\, 7:00 PM\, at the Bryan Glazer Family JCC\, 522 S. Howard\, Tampa. The program will include a presentation and book signing by Wolff and a commemoration honoring the work and memory of Wallenberg provided by area clergy.
