This program explores the historical development of informed consent\, rooted in the medical experiments of the Holocaust\, and examines its critical importance in legal and medical ethics today. \n\nCLE Credits: 3.5 Total (3.5 General\, 1.5 Ethics)\n\nThis 3.5 hour seminar provides 3.5 hours of Continuing Legal Education (CLE) in General Law\, Health Law and International Law\, 3.5 hours of Continuing Medical Education (CME) and 1.5 hours in Ethics. (CJE accreditation pending.)\n\n\nKeynote speaker: Dr. Matthew Wynia. Panel discussion facilitated by Josh Magidson\, Esq.\, Mark McLaughlin\, Esq.\, and Andrew Sasso\, Esq.\n\n\n Get Tickets\n\nThe Program\nThere will be three discussions led by experts in the field: \n\nMedicine\, Nazism and the Holocaust: How Healers Became Killers led by Dr. Matthew Wynia explains the context in which medical involvement in Nazism and the Holocaust arose.\nThe Nuremberg Medical Trial and Research Ethics: Pervasively Influential – Frequently Ignored led by Dr. Matthew Wynia will explore in more detail the types\nof experiments that took place under Nazi Germany.\nLastly\, a panel discussion will be led by Josh Magidson\, Esq.\, Mark McLaughlin\, Esq.\, and Andrew Sasso\, Esq.\, about legal and medical ethics of informed consent.\n\n Title Sponsor\n \nSupporting Sponsor \nMacfarlane\, Ferguson & McMullen \n \nInformed Consent\n The development of this concept evolved out of the atrocities committed in the medical experiments conducted by the Nazi regime during the Holocaust.  The Nuremberg Code\, stemming from the Nuremberg Trials after WWII\, established guidelines for human experimentation.  The key principles of the code comprise the following: \nVoluntary Consent – Individuals must freely consent to participate in research\, without coercion or duress. \n\nPurpose and Benefits – Research should be designed to yield results for the good of society\, with benefits justifying risks.\nAvoiding Harm – The experiment should be conducted to avoid unnecessary physical and mental suffering or injury.\nQualified Personnel – Experiments should be conducted only by scientifically qualified persons.\n\n \n\nOur Presenters\n\n\n \nJosh Magidson\, Esq. is a litigation attorney at the firm of Macfarlane\, Ferguson & McMullen. Mr. Magidson’s primary area of practice is civil trial work\, with extensive work in commercial cases\, and probate\, estate and trust litigation. He has experience in handling federal civil rights cases involving first amendment issues and local municipal ordinances which he successfully litigated before the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. \n\n  Mark E. McLaughlin\, Esq. attended Florida State University\, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Risk Management and Insurance. Mark has been practicing law for over 30 years and practices primarily in the areas of medical malpractice defense\, commercial litigation and general civil trial law. \n\n  Andrew Sasso\, Esq. is a trust and estates attorney with the firm of Macfarlane\, Ferguson & McMullen. Mr. Sasso practices in the areas of probate\, guardianship and trust administration\, representing individual and corporate fiduciaries in capacities\, such as personal representative\, administrator ad litem\, curator\, guardian\, trustee\, and special fiduciary. Andrew also practices in the areas of probate guardianship\, and trust litigation representing individuals in disputes concerning guardianships\, wills\, and trusts. \n \nMatthew Wynia\, MD\, MPH is Board certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases\, with additional training in public health and health services research. He has worked nationally and internationally on issues related to professionalism and the social roles of physicians\, including the roles of health professionals in the Holocaust and the contemporary implications of this legacy. He has led national projects on medicine and the Holocaust\, professionalism in medicine and public health\, ethics in wartime\, truth and racial reconciliation in medicine\, and more. \nDr. Wynia currently leads the University of Colorado’s Center for Bioethics and Humanities\, where the Holocaust\, Genocide and Contemporary Bioethics program spans all health science training programs and all four campuses. \n\n  \n

This program is an important step in learning how to become an Upstander in our community today. \nIn partnership with The Butterfly Project and Menorah Life\, participants will paint ceramic butterflies alongside Menorah Life residents—creating a powerful connection that spans generations. Each painted butterfly serves as a beautiful\, symbolic memorial to a life lost\, and all completed butterflies will be assembled into a permanent commemorative mural to be displayed at Menorah Life. \nTo provide gentle and respectful context\, the program will begin with a brief\, age-appropriate documentary about the Holocaust. \nThe Butterfly Project is a call to action through education\, the arts\, and memorial making. Each butterfly memorializes a child who perished during the Holocaust\, with 1.5 million butterflies being painted nationwide. All children must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the program.
