SUMMARY:Honoring the Memory of Raoul Wallenberg & Presentation with Author\, Morris Wolff
DESCRIPTION:  \n                \nThirty-four years ago\, when Morris Wolff was practicing international and trial law in Philadelphia and was a professor at the University of Pennsylvania Law School\, he was asked by the half-brother of Swedish diplomat\, Raoul Wallenberg\, to sue the Soviet Union and force them to release his brother.   Raoul Wallenberg\, who was not Jewish\, was instrumental in saving tens of thousands of Jewish lives in Nazi occupied Hungary. Kidnapped by the Russians\, he disappeared into the Soviet Gulag. Much of the mysteries surrounding Wallenberg’s imprisonment\, the circumstances of his death\, and his possible ties to US intelligence remain unsolved. Wallenberg’s many courageous actions earned him many honors\, including the titles of Honorary Citizen of the United States\, and “Righteous Among the Nations” by the State of Israel.   \nWolff has written a book about his pro bono effort to rescue Wallenberg from a Soviet prison\, and he will be the featured speaker at an interfaith event on Wednesday\, May 17th\, 7:00 PM\, at the Bryan Glazer Family JCC\, 522 S. Howard\, Tampa. The program will include a presentation and book signing by Wolff and a commemoration honoring the work and memory of Wallenberg provided by area clergy. A dessert buffet will follow the program.   \nWhile the event is free and open to the Tampa Bay community\, those who wish to become Patrons will receive VIP reserved seating for two (2) at the presentation\, an autographed copy of Wolff’s book\, a private pre-event meet-and-greet session with Wolff at 6:00 pm\, and recognition in the event program. \nThe Florida Holocaust Museum is a Community Partner for this event. This evening is sponsored by the Tampa Jewish Book Festival and Tampa Ameet Chapter of Hadassah\, The Women’s Zionist Organization of America. \nFor reservations\, sponsorships\, or more information about the event\, please contact Brandy Gold at the Tampa JCC at brandy.gold@jewishtampa.com – 813-769-4725.

SUMMARY:The FHM Film Series: Paragraph 175
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the exhibition Nazi Persecution of Homosexuals: 1933-1945\, The FHM presents a special showing of the film Paragraph 175. \n \nThe Florida Holocaust Museum invites the community to attend a special showing of the film Paragraph 175 followed by a panel discussion\, featuring St. Pete/Clearwater Film Commissioner Tony Armer\, Department Head of Film at Ringling College of Art and Design Bradley Battersby\, Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Tampa Dr. Christopher Boulton\, President of the Gasparilla International Film Festival Rachel Feinman\, and Tampa-based Casting Director Rose Rosen\, CSA with Casting by Rose Rosen! \n  \nParagraph 175 is a documentary film released in 2000\, directed by the Academy Award-winning producing/directing team Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman\, and narrated by Rupert Everett. Between 1933 and 1945\, 100\,000 men were arrested for homosexuality under Paragraph 175\, the sodomy provision of the German penal code dating back to 1871. Some were imprisoned\, others were sent to concentration camps. Of the latter\, only about 4\,000 survived.  \n\n \nThis epic story is told through personal accounts of men and women who lived through it: the Jewish gay resistance fighter who posed as a Hitler youth member to rescue his lover from a Gestapo transfer camp; the Jewish lesbian who escaped to England with the help of an older woman she had a crush on; the photographer and loyal German citizen who was arrested and imprisoned for homosexuality\, then joined the army on his release because he “wanted to be with men.”\n \n\nParagraph 175 has received numerous awards\, including Best Documentary Jury Prize for Direction at Sundance 2000 and the Teddy Award for Best Documentary at the 2000 Berlin Film Festival. \n \n\nThe screening of Paragraph 175 is presented in conjunction with the traveling exhibition Nazi Persecution of Homosexuals 1933-1945\, on loan from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and currently on display at The Florida Holocaust Museum. Presented locally by Wells Fargo\, this exhibition examines the Nazi regime’s attempt to eradicate homosexuality\, which left thousands dead and shattered the lives of many more.\n \n\n\n\n\nThe screening of Paragraph 175 and panel discussion is free and open to the public and will take place on Wednesday\, June 21 at 6:30 p.m. at The Florida Holocaust Museum. Please RSVP by calling 727.820.0100\, extension 301. \n \n\nA special thank you to The FHM Film Series Media Sponsor\, Sunscreen Film Festival!\n\n  \n“Not to be missed… Elegant and powerful!” David Ansen\, Newsweek\n \n“Heart-stopping! Imbued with humanity and unexpected humor.” Jan Stuart\, Newsday\n \n“Exquisite and powerful.” Mick LaSalle\, San Francisco Chronicle\n \n“Illuminating\, poignant and heartening.” Kevin Thomas\, Los Angeles Times\n \n

SUMMARY:"Operation Finale: The Capture & Trial of Adolf Eichmann" Exhibition Opens
DESCRIPTION:The Florida Holocaust Museum is thrilled to announce the blockbuster exhibition Operation Finale: The Capture & Trial of Adolf Eichmann opens on February 10\, 2018! \n“Operation Finale: The Capture & Trial of Adolf Eichmann is an extraordinary exhibition. It engages your intellect at the start and tears your heart out by the end.”  -Cleveland Jewish News\n“A Holocaust Museum smash.” -Chicago Tribune\nOperation Finale: The Capture & Trial of Adolf Eichmann is the first exhibition in the United States to fully document the pursuit\, capture\, extradition\, and trial of a Nazi war criminal. The Florida Holocaust Museum is proud to present this blockbuster exhibition\, co-produced by The Mossad – Israel Secret Intelligence Service; Beit Hatfutsot – The Museum of the Jewish People\, Tel Aviv\, Israel; and the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage\, Cleveland\, Ohio. \nFifty-six years ago\, Adolf Eichmann\, who had been in charge of transporting millions of European Jews to death camps\, sat in a courtroom for a trial that would be among the first in history to be completely televised. The trial captivated millions of people across the globe and it was the first time that many of them learned the details of the Holocaust. \nThe dramatic story behind one of the world’s most notorious escaped Nazi war criminals being brought to justice is told using recently declassified artifacts from the Mossad\, Israel’s Secret Intelligence Service. The exhibition includes objects and images made available outside the country for the first time – original 1960s-era artifacts\, photographs\, Telly Award winning films and audio\, as well as contemporary design elements and interactive features\, to tell a story of espionage\, intrigue and\, ultimately\, justice served. \nAlso included in the exhibition is one of the most iconic objects of the century – the bulletproof glass booth in which the accused sat as the courtroom drama was broadcast around the globe. \nDuring World War II\, Eichmann was the key functionary in the Nazis’ attempt to annihilate all of Europe’s 11 million Jews. After the war he disappeared\, but his crimes made him a wanted man. Operation Finale – the code name of Israel’s effort to find him – reveals exactly how Mossad agents located Eichmann in his hiding place in South America\, and how they abducted and smuggled him safely to Israel to stand trial. \nCareer Mossad agent Avner Avraham curated the espionage artifacts featured in Operation Finale: The Capture & Trial of Adolf Eichmann. This exhibition is the first time that the recently declassified Mossad materials have been seen outside of Israel. \nOperation Finale: The Capture & Trial of Adolf Eichmann opens to the public on Saturday\, February 10\, 2018 and is on display through July 15\, 2018 at The Florida Holocaust Museum.  \n  \nOperation Finale: The Capture and Trial of Adolf Eichmann is a co-production of The Mossad – Israel Secret Intelligence Service; Beit Hatfutsot – The Museum of the Jewish People\, Tel Aviv\, Israel; and the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage\, Cleveland\, Ohio. \n \nThis exhibition is made possible by a generous grant from the Maltz Family Foundation.  \nLocal support is provided by the Jewish Federation of Pinellas & Pasco Counties. \n***Special docent led group tours of the blockbuster exhibition Operation Finale: The Capture & Trial of Adolf Eichmann are available for an additional $3.00 on Tuesdays\, Wednesdays\, Thursdays\, and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. beginning on February 25\, 2018. Group tours must be booked two weeks in advance. To book\, please email tours@thefhm.org and include “Operation Finale Group Tour” in the subject line. For questions and/or additional information\, please call the Museum at 727.820.0100 ext. 230.

SUMMARY:"Letters to Sala: A Young Woman’s Life in Nazi Labor Camps" Exhibition Opens
DESCRIPTION:Letters to Sala: A Young Woman’s Life in Nazi Labor Camps \nOn display February 17 – August 19\, 2018 \n \nThis exhibition is based on a compelling collection of rare Holocaust-era letters and photographs now in The New York Public Library Dorot Jewish Division. From handwritten postcards to photographs and official documents\, each was saved at great personal risk by Sala Garncarz from the time she entered her first of seven Nazi labor camps in 1940 until her liberation in 1945. The collection and narrative provide a rare first-hand view into the human drama that unfolded among Jews forced to work as slave laborers and those who loved and wrote them as long as they could.

SUMMARY:Pass the Plate: The FHM’s 4th Annual Spring Cook-Off\, featuring Gabrielle Rossmer Gropman & Sonya Gropman
DESCRIPTION:Pass the Plate: The FHM’s 4th Annual Spring Cook-Off \nFeaturing Gabrielle Rossmer Gropman and Sonya Gropman \n \nMarch 11\, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at The FHM \nJoin us in a celebration of family\, history\, heritage\, and food! Their book\, The German-Jewish Cookbook: Recipes and History of a Cuisine features recipes for German-Jewish cuisine as it existed in Germany prior to World War II\, and as refugees later adapted it in the United States and elsewhere. Because these dishes differ from more familiar Jewish food\, they will be a discovery for many people. The Gropmans—a mother-daughter author pair—have honored the original recipes Gabrielle learned after arriving as a baby in Washington Heights from Germany in 1939\, while updating their format to reflect contemporary standards of recipe writing. Please bring a family dish handed down through the generations. Sample dishes and vote on your favorites. \nLimited seating and dish room! To submit your family dish and/or to reserve your seat\, please call 727.820.0100 ext. 301. Free and open to the public.
