Virtual program via our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/TheFHM \nPlease join us as we remember the 80th anniversary of the massacre at Babi Yar. On September 29 and 30\, 1941 almost 34\,000 Jewish men\, women\, and children were murdered in ravine just outside of Kiev\, Ukraine. This massacre was one of the largest mass killings during the Holocaust. \nDuring a virtual panel discussion\, panelists will discuss the history of Babi Yar\, its aftermath\, and its legacy\, including Dmitri Shostakovich’s 13th Symphony which he completed in 1962.  The work sets poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko work on the mass execution to music. SUMMARY:Book Talk: “A Woman’s Story of Survival: Franci’s War”
DESCRIPTION:The FHM is pleased to welcome prize-winning 2G journalist and author Helen Epstein for a virtual presentation about  her mother’s book: FRANCI’S WAR. Available in paperback\, e-book and audio format\, it is a powerful and compelling read by a Czech Jew who survived the war as a dressmaker and electrician. This program is held in association with The FHM’s newest exhibition Stitching History from the Holocaust. \nFranci Rabinek Epstein wrote her Holocaust memoir in the 1970s but after it was rejected by several publishers\, gave it to her daughter. Helen used it as source material. Helen used it in Children of the Holocaust and Where She Came From. In 2018\, prompted by #MeToo and inquiries into her mother’s story\, Helen revisited the manuscript\, annotated it\, and sold it to ten publishers around the world. \nLate author Franci Rabinek was 19 years old when\, in  March of 1939\,  the German Army entered Prague. That day began her six-year journey from Prague to Terezin\, to the Czech family camp in Auschwitz-Birkenau\, to slave labor camp in Hamburg\, and to Bergen Belsen where she was liberated by the British. \nIn this memoir\, she offers her intense\, candid\, and sometimes funny account of those dark years\, with the women prisoners in her tight-knit circle of friends. Her daughter provides context in a journalistic Afterword and will answer questions about the process of editing and publishing her mother’s work. \nThis program is held in association with The FHM’s newest exhibition Stitching History from the Holocaust. \nwww.helenepstein.com \n

DESCRIPTION:Join us on Facebook Live on Thursday\, April 29 at 1 p.m. for an impactful virtual program\, The Pardoll Family Lecture Series Presents: Rwanda’s Pathway Back to Trust.  \nThis discussion will feature the voices and perspectives of Carl Wilkens\, humanitarian aid worker and now leader of the World Outside My Shoes organization\, and Damas Gisimba of Gisimba Memorial Center. Carl Wilkens was the only American who stayed in Rwanda during the genocide. Among the people he helped at the time were the residents of an orphanage led by Damas Gisimba.  \nThis conversation is part of the Genocide and Human Rights Awareness Movement (GHRAM). \n  \nPlease note: Since we are a public page\, you do not need to have a Facebook account or log into Facebook to access this program. Thank you for joining us virtually. \n  \nAbout the speakers: \nCarl Wilkens – For over a decade\, Carl Wilkens has been sharing stories around the globe to inspire and equip people to “enter the world of The Other.” He was the only American who chose to stay in Kigali\, Rwanda throughout the 1994 genocide. Venturing out each day into streets crackling with mortars and gunfire\, he worked his way through roadblocks of angry\, bloodstained soldiers and civilians armed with machetes and assault rifles in order to bring food\, water and medicine to groups of orphans trapped around the city. Working with Rwandan colleagues\, they helped save the lives of hundreds. His harrowing yet hopeful journey weaves together stories of tremendous risk and fierce compassion in the midst of senseless slaughter. In 2011\, Carl completed a book detailing these days titled I’m Not Leaving. A 40 minute documentary by the same title has since been released. Carl’s storytelling does not stop with Rwanda’s tragic history\, but moves forward to the powerful and inspiring recovery process. Among the many lessons he shares from his experience is the transformative belief that we don’t have to be defined by what we lost or our worst choices. We can be defined by what we do with what remains – what we do next after terrible choices. Each year he returns to Rwanda with students and educators to see for themselves how people are working together to rebuild their country and rebuild trust. Rwanda’s story is a powerful platform to launch meaningful conversations under the broad umbrella of learning to live together. We explore stories of the genocide and how respect leads to empathy\, resulting in inclusion (REI). \nDamas Gisimba – Damas Gisimba has been the legal representative of the Gisimba Memorial Center since 1986\, working with orphans\, abandoned children\, and families in distress. He was born in 1959 in Goma\, Congo Kinshasa. He attended Ecole Industrielle de Goma in mechanical engineering. Gisimba Orphanage was founded by Peter and Dancilla Gisimba in the 1980’s. They took orphans into their home from the local community\, until there were too many to house and they transferred to a larger location. It was renamed the Gisimba Memorial Centre in 1990 by their elder son\, Gisimba Damas\, for the memory of his parents’ work. After the death of his parents\, he worked with orphans at Gisimba Memorial Center. Gisimba Damas married Mukandanga Beatrice and together\, they have four biological kids – three boys and one girl. In his charity work for the orphanage\, he has received about 3\,000 children in 35 years. The story of the orphanage’s 33-year lifespan\, at some point\, cheerlessly intertwines with the country’s dark history – the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. When Gisimba was young\, his parents taught him that people are people\, no matter their appearance or physical shape. Gisimba managed to save 320 children and 80 adult Tutsis. Due to this\, he was honored with several prizes including: \n● Switzerland Paul Greninger Award\n● Jardin des Les justes de Monde in Italy\n● H.E Paul Kagame the President of Rwanda Heroes Award\n● Abarinzi Bigihango Protectors of Friendship Pact Award\n● Gacaca Award (Traditional Rwanda Courts) \nAt 59 years old\, Gisimba is now considered as a living hero who determined himself to sacrifice his life in exchange for the children and people who were hidden at the orphanage.

There will be Survivor Talks at 12 p.m. and 5 p.m. \nThrough our educational programs based on original artifacts\, archival documents\, and artwork\, The Florida Holocaust Museum works daily to translate the staggering statistics of genocide into individual stories. The Names Reading Commemoration is another effort to remember the victims as individual people with life histories. \nReading the names of the Jewish men\, women\, and children killed during the Holocaust is a symbolic yet deeply personal way of remembering these individuals. Most victims of the Holocaust don’t have graves – reciting their names allows for them to be memorialized while reminding us of their human dignity. DESCRIPTION:This free\, virtual program will highlight the opening of our new exhibition\, “Justice\, Justice\, You Shall Pursue: the Art and Propaganda of Arthur Syzk.” This event will feature a conversation with Rabbi Irvin Ungar\, author and curator of The Arthur Szyk Society in Burlingame\, California.\n \nPolish-Jewish artist Arthur Szyk may be best known for his wartime anti-Nazi illustrations and for the Haggadah he illustrated in the tradition of medieval illuminated manuscripts. A prolific artist\, he created political cartoons and propaganda that took aim at Nazi Germany’s murderous policies.\n \nThe Florida Holocaust Museum newest exhibition features Szyk’s illustrations\, illuminated books\, and other works. The exhibition focuses on his early artwork created before World War II\, including his famous Hagaddah\, and illustrations and propaganda drawn and painted during World War II that ridiculed the Nazis. The exhibition also features works that speak out for social justice and tolerance in the United States as well as works praising American ideals of liberty and justice.\n \nIrvin Ungar\, a former pulpit rabbi and antiquarian bookseller\, has devoted the past quarter-century to scholarship on Arthur Szyk. He has curated and consulted for numerous Szyk exhibitions. He is the author of Arthur Szyk: Soldier in Art (winner of the 2017 National Jewish Book Award)\, co-producer of the documentary film\, “Soldier in Art: Arthur Szyk\,” and the creator and publisher of the luxury limited edition of The Szyk Haggadah.\n \nBe among the first to see the new exhibit in person when you visit The FHM in January. DESCRIPTION:In partnership with (www.hcplc.org)\, Holocaust Survivor Marie Silverman will tell her story which includes her life in hiding\, internment\, escape\, and emigration.  The talk will be followed by audience Q&A. \nMarie Silverman (née Berkovic): Marie was born in 1931 and lived with her sister Jeannette and their parents in Antwerp\, Belgium when World War II began. After Germany invaded Belgium\, the family escaped to France. For a while\, non-Jews hid them on a farm but when the roundups began\, the family was captured and separated: the sisters with their mother were placed in an internment camp at Rivesaltes\, France while their father was sent to a different camp. After 9 months\, Marie and Jeannette’s mother managed to smuggle her daughters out of Rivesaltes. They were hiding with other refugees in Vence\, France. They were then briefly reunited with the parents who managed to escape but the father soon died as a result of the mistreatment he had endured in the camp. Two partisan couriers took the sisters across the Pyrénées Mountains on foot from Vence to Barcelona\, Spain. Marie and Jeannette lived with their aunt and uncle and then came to the United States. DESCRIPTION:Kristallnacht Commemoration\, featuring Dr. Mark Wygoda – Virtual Program \nMonday\, November 9th\, 2020 at 6:30 p.m. – Streaming virtually on The Florida Holocaust Museum’s Facebook Live \nThe Florida Holocaust Museum’s Annual Kristallnacht Commemoration takes place virtually on Monday\, November 9th at 6:30 p.m. The program commemorating Kristallnacht\, also called the Night of Broken Glass\, features a virtual conversation with Dr. Mark Wygoda. \nDr. Mark Wygoda’s father\, Hermann Wygoda\, was a German-born Polish Jew who defied the Nazis throughout the war. Initially a smuggler to the Warsaw ghetto\, Mr. Wygoda moved to Berlin in early 1943 where he worked undercover for nearly a year for a German business as a foreman\, translator\, and armed courier. He then escaped to German-occupied Italy where he joined the Italian partisans\, becoming commander of an assault brigade and later an entire division. “Commandante Enrico”\, as he was known to his troops\, planned and directed attacks on enemy forces\, negotiated prisoner exchanges\, and helped liberate the city of Savona. The program features a conversation between US Department of State Special Envoy to Monitor & Combat Antisemitism\, Elan S. Carr\, and Tad Stahnke\, Director\, International Educational Outreach at US Holocaust Memorial Museum. Special Envoy Carr and Mr. Stahnke will discuss current Antisemitism policies and priorities\, the recent Claims Conference survey findings\, and the “Never Again Education Act” passed in May 2020. A viewer Q&A session will be moderated by Elizabeth Gelman\, Executive Director of The Florida Holocaust Museum. \nAs Special Envoy\, Elan S. Carr advises the Secretary of State and is responsible for directing U.S. policies and projects aimed at countering Antisemitism throughout the world. Prior to his appointment\, Special Envoy Carr served as a Deputy District Attorney for Los Angeles County\, where he prosecuted violent crimes\, including hate crimes\, for more than a decade. He is an officer in the United States Army Reserve\, and he has received multiple awards and commendations for his nearly two decades of military service. As the son of Iraqi Jewish refugees who fled persecution in Iraq\, Special Envoy Carr speaks Hebrew and the Iraqi dialect of Arabic. While in Iraq\, he met with remnants of the Jewish community there and led Jewish services in the former presidential palace of Saddam Hussein in Baghdad. In the course of his work in the Jewish community\, he has been a recognized leader in the fight against Antisemitism on U.S. college campuses and around the world. \nTad Stahnke is U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum’s William and Sheila Konar Director of International Educational Outreach\, and Director of the Museum’s Initiative on Holocaust Denial and Antisemitism. Before joining the Museum\, Mr. Stahnke was Program Director at Human Rights First\, an international human rights advocacy organization\, and Policy Director at the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom\, which was created by Congress to advise the U.S. government on advancing respect for the internationally-recognized right to freedom of religion. Righteous is the true story of the man who sounded the alarm of Hitler’s plan to murder all the Jews in Europe. Schulte’s warning reached the desk of President Roosevelt in December 1942. \n\n\nHis identity was a closely guarded secret for over forty years and his heroic act to stop the Holocaust was kept hidden from his family and from the world. Righteous tells his story through the lens of Priscilla Schulte\, the American granddaughter who never knew him. She uncovers a compelling and poignant portrait of a man who risked his life and the lives of his family to stand up against evil. DESCRIPTION:Testimony from Ruth Bielski Ehrreich\, daughter of Tuvia Bielski of the Bielski partisans \n\n\n\n\nJoin Ruth Bielski Ehrreich\, daughter of Tuvia Bielski of the Bielski partisans\, as she virtually shares her testimony on Thursday\, July 30th at 6:30 p.m. on The Florida Holocaust Museum’s Facebook Live\, followed by live Q&A. Ehrreich’s father\, Tuvia Bielski\, with the help of his brothers Asael and Zus Bielski\, saved more than 1\,200 people while living in the forest during World War II. \n\n\nThe Bielski brothers took refuge from the Nazis in the forests surrounding Novogrudok\, Belarus\, and there formed a community of men\, women and children. Through their leadership\, the group survived starvation\, harsh winters\, and the threat of the Nazis and their collaborators for two years. The Bielski brothers’ Jewish partisan unit\, or otriad\, as known in Russian\, was unique. While the great majority of partisan groups in World War II sought to fight the Germans in their midst\, the Bielski brothers cared more about preserving the lives of as many Jews as possible than they did about attacking the German forces that occupied Western Belorussia. \n\n\nIn 2017\, The Florida Holocaust Museum presented an award-winning original exhibition “Courage and Compassion: The Legacy of the Bielski Brothers\,” that showcased the heroic efforts of these three brothers. The exhibit was first displayed at the museum in 2008. \nThe Bielski brothers story was also depicted in the 2008 film “Defiance” starring Daniel Craig as Tuvia Bielski\, Liev Schreiber as Zus Bielski\, and Jamie Bell as Asael Bielski.

DESCRIPTION:The Florida Holocaust Museum is pleased to promote the the Tampa JCCs & Federation and the Jewish Federation of Florida’s Gulf Coast’s Jewish Film Festival and virtual airing of Saul & Ruby\, To Life! to be viewed on Thursday\, June 25th beginning at 3:00 P.M. The cost to view this film is $5. \nSaul & Ruby\, To Life! is an overwhelming joyful example of relationships\, introduced to us through Saul\, 94\, a drummer\, and Ruby\, 90\, an accordionist. Both Saul and Ruby are Florida Holocaust Survivors and musicians with an insatiable lust for life. When the producers began filming the duo\, Saul and Ruby had recently formed The Holocaust Survivor Band\, the first of its kind. Their dream was to one day perform their music in Poland\, their homeland where they endured unimaginable trauma. Their mission then\, and now\, is to spread a message of world peace at a time when antisemitism and prejudice are growing throughout the world. Through the sharing of their music and stories\, they have learned that they are also healing their own wounds while revealing their resilience. \nThe 24th annual Tampa Bay Jewish Film Festival was originally set to run March 29 through April 5\, but was postponed due to COVID-19. Now\, the festival will be offered through a virtual version of the event from June 24-28\, featuring 11 films\, all previously selected for the originally planned event. \nThe complete schedule and purchasing information is available on the festival website www.tbjff.org.
