Art and Autobiography: Paintings By Nava Mentkow

Ernest Kan
Portraits by Nava Mentkow

As the granddaughter of Holocaust survivors, Nava Mentkow began a project interviewing and painting Holocaust survivors. The purpose of her project is to have a visual testimony of the lives of men and women. They are a true testament not only to history, but also to the power and strength of the human spirit.

Not all survivors are comfortable retelling their stories. For these people in particular, this project is of the utmost importance. By painting these portraits, Mentkow’s hope is to capture the strength and history of the people she paints.
