Essie Shor was 16 years old when the Nazis invaded Belarus. After the Nazis occupied Novogrudok, the town where she and her family lived, most of her family were killed in an action. Only Essie and her father remained. Later, Essie was able to escape to the forest and spent two years as part of partisan group led by the Bielski brothers. Following the war, she married and had two children. Essie and her family emigrated to New York and she eventually became a school teacher.
