Zoe Wright, Public Relations Intern

The Florida Holocaust Museum has been selected as finalist for the 2019 Good ‘Burger Awards! A Good ‘Burger Award is given to a business, organization or individual in greater St. Petersburg that makes a positive impact in the St. Petersburg community.

The FHM is a finalist in the Arts & Culture category. The category is made up of individuals, companies and organizations with a focus in performing, visual and fine arts, literature, architecture, graphic design, crafts, film, digital media, video, humanities and historic preservation. As a museum in the Tampa Bay community, The FHM has always focused on community engagement and education. This past year, the museums focus was achieved through Speak Up, Speak Now!

Speak Up, Speak Now! is a program offered at many middle schools in the Tampa Bay area. The purpose of the program is to teach Holocaust history in way which students can then draw age-appropriate lessons that are relevant in their lives. Participants are taught how important it is to speak up if you see injustice.

A participant of Speak Up, Speak Now! said, “I think it is important to be an upstander because there are so many times where we see someone being bullied or we see something wrong happening and we know that it is wrong, but sometimes we just decide to stay quiet about it. But I think it’s important to be the change that you want to see.”

The FHM staff lead students in discussions and activities that teach students the importance of being an upstander, especially in todays world where prejudice, stereotypes and racism is still prevalent. Most importantly, it is important to never forget the atrocities of the Holocaust and how we must ensure something like it never happens again.

Speak Up, Speak Now! is free to all schools. If you are interested in booking this program for your school, please contact education@thefhm.org.
