The FHM is saddened by the passing of Holocaust Survivor Katarina Fried.

Born in Brezno-Nhronom, Czechoslovakia in 1932, Katarina grew up in a non-observant Jewish home. When the persecution of Jews reached her community, Katarina experienced harassment and violence firsthand before she and her family went into hiding. From October 1944 to April 1945, they survived in the Mosnica woods of the Tatra Mountains.

After the war, Katarina returned to school, rebuilt her life, and married Vojtech Fried in 1951. In 1964, the couple escaped Soviet-occupied Czechoslovakia, eventually making their way to the United States via Israel. Katarina settled in Florida, where she became involved in Holocaust education.

She donated various photographs and artifacts to The FHM. These artifacts will help us continue her legacy and educate future generations.

Katarina shared her testimony with The FHM via a video interview. Learn more here.

May her memory be for a blessing.
